Now it’s time for our latest review, and it’s the turn of
the Sailor Professional Gear Slim Fountain Pen, which as the name suggests is
in the small variety of Sailor Pens.
So here it is…
All Sailor pens, rather handily they all come with ink
convertors, instructions (in English as well as Japanese…).
These are very small pens, but definitely one of our
favourites at the moment. They are one of the least expensive pens (that we
stock at least) with a 14 Carat Gold Nib.
Relatively conservative in appearance, as with most of the
Sailor Range of pens, clearly a Japanese trait.
When we tested it, we used the Sailor brand of Jentle Ink
(the Grenade colour to be precise), whose bottles use one of those uncanny
designs which enable you to get every last drop out, using the simple, yet
ingenious plastic cone in the middle of the bottle which when flipped upside
down fills up. Allowing every last drop to be used, and that is also where you
fill the pen from.
In this case, we used the zoom nib, Japanese nibs tend to be
on the fine side, so a Medium Fine is equivalent to a European Fine and so on.
Now, the Zoom nib is something rather special. When used
upright, you get a reasonably medium line, if you flip it over and use the back
of the nib then you get a much finer line. As you gradually lay the pen further
down, the line gets thicker.
See it in action here...
We’ve found that people find this nib such fun, that after
using it for any length of time, before deciding that they really need to own
one!
Besides the great range of nibs, in particular the Zoom nib,
the great thing about this pen is the price at just over £120. Whilst still
having the feel, finish and manufacturing quality of a much more expensive pen. Besides the Sailor Pro Gear Slim, if you’re into smallish
pens, we’d also highly recommend the Sailor 1911 Standard, which again, for the
price is an outstanding little pen!
